Overview
High Atlantic is a former Reunification Alliance colony that broke away from the Charter in 3156 during the Crisis of Faith, primarily owing to the related disagreements about the rights of positronic androids. Since then, it has remodelled itself as a tourism world catering primarily to the Celestian Empire and fellow Non-aligned Worlds.
Despite being one of the most populous and socially significant planets in the known galaxy, High Atlantic has managed to remain independent of any major interstellar power. Run by the shadowy Tourist Board, it receives trillions of visitors each year from across known space, and this rampant popularity with the general public effectively prevents any open hostility; it is simply political suicide.
The world’s entire societal structure is devoted to maximising the tourism industry, with the major holiday package companies commanding enormous influence, both indirectly and through their representatives on the Tourist Board. The cities are built around nightclubs, bars, brothels, and casinos, the countryside devoted to wildlife tourism, the beaches sculpted into bustling resorts. Aside from the dedicated Safariland spaces, High Atlantic is engulfed in pounding bass and neon light, with drugs, sex, and alcohol available on every street corner. Corrupt and corporate, it remains a fallen paradise of hedonism and earthly pleasures.
Etymology
Like many of the early colonies, High Atlantic is named after the first colony ship to make planetfall. This is partially why there are a number of colonies named after oceans: the Ocean-class was the first long-range Otherlight settler ship commisioned by the Reunification Alliance.
