Sargassa is a small terrestrial dwarf planet in the Sieben system, owned by the Reunification Alliance. While unfit for settlement and lacking in any major natural resources, Sargassa was deemed useful as a potential fuel dump and the Alliance Central Authority handed it over to the Reunification Navy in 3056, five years after discovery.
The RN has since established an interceptor base on the world, with supply, accommodation, and (limited) leisure facilities on the planet’s surface, and launch and ship management infrastructure in orbit above. This installation has played a prominent role in local system politics ever since, enabling the concentration of consistent military force in-system to protect Alliance interests. It has also fulfilled a more typical trade policing role at several points, with the Alliance providing shipping protection to Pacifica and New India at various times as part of political agreements.
The station’s usual complement of six High-Endurance Interceptors was often reinforced by one or more Patrol Cutters whenever it was tasked with an active trade protection role, while its facilities were also capable of accommodating the occasional heavier asset when necessary. In 3394, when Pacifica re-signed the Reunification Alliance Charter, there came a need for greater trade protection in the system. The base at Sargassa was consequently expanded, and at last received a degree of local support from a new interceptor station on Pacifica itself.
In 3402, Sargassa served as the staging post for Alliance forces ahead of the intervention on High Atlantic. Four of its interceptors flew with the Alliance forces on their approach to the planet, and the installation subsequently earned its first battle honours when they engaged Tourist Board atmospheric fighters with a top-down orbital missile attack.
